Article Outline

Trophoblast Research is a record of the annual meetings of the International Federation of Placenta Associations (IFPA). The present volume, “Placenta: Key to Pregnancy Success,” reports on IFPA Meeting 2009 at Adelaide, South Australia. It includes fourteen review articles based on plenary presentations as well as a comprehensive workshop report. The meeting was hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Placental Research Association (ANZPRA). Thanks are due to Dr. Claire Roberts and her colleagues for developing an exciting programme that demonstrated the depth and breadth of placental research in the host country. The high quality of the presentations will be apparent from the papers in this volume.

Workshops are an important part of every IFPA Meeting. The current volume has a single report for all twelve workshops. I am grateful to the workshop organizers for supplying summaries and I owe a special debt to Dr. Gendie Lash, who undertook the herculean task of editing these contributions into a coherent whole.

Four distinguished scientists have consented to join the Editorial Board. They are Dr. Hidetaka Katabuchi, Kumamoto University, Japan, Dr. Jeff Keelan, University of Western Australia, Dr. Yoshiki Kudo, University of Hiroshima, Japan, and Dr. Melissa Westwood, University of Manchester, United Kingdom. Dr. Keiiche Isaka, Tokyo Medical University, retires from the Editorial Board on completion of this volume and it is a pleasure to thank him for his support of Trophoblast Research.

All articles in this volume of Trophoblast Research underwent peer review. The commitment of authors, reviewers and Editorial Board has made it possible to publish the volume within six months of the meeting in Australia with most papers being available on line much earlier. This rapid publication is also a reflection of the excellent work done by the Elsevier Health Sciences team and in particular the dedication of Joanne Creek. It is also a pleasure to acknowledge Greyling Peoples for his support of our journals and our organization.

We look forward to meeting you again during IFPA Meeting 2010 in Chile and IFPA Meeting 2011 in Norway.
